Tales of Dyn
Vagrants know that Furlo, the wandering storyteller god, walks the roads of Polm weaving yarns of the legends and heroes of old. Perchance the old god will share the life of an unknown hero of the Magus Wars, the horrors of the Fey Wrath, or the true life of the first High King of the Covenant. It is not outside of his power for the great bard to divulge the shadowy intrigues of the Drahm empire…
...And it is just as likely one might hear the story of common wayward bladeslingers who dared to challenge their times.
THE KIND DEVIL
SHADOWS ON AN EMPIRE
THE SHROUDED LION
THE MONK’S DELAY
This is the tale of the time of the Magus Wars (CB 38-65) and how Aldern the Recluse first met Otirus, the young man destined to become the dreaded Shadow in Ribknot, and where he first encountered the frightful legacy of Drahm sorcery.
Young Aldern Hilstep and Cian Vestgard are summoned to the Cheiu castle at Dorns Vale to present themselves as possible wards of Master Abrin of Relics. They are greeted coldly by Leerling Otirus, a disciple of Abrin. Otirus puts them through several traditional Cheiu tests designed to instruct them in important lessons of the proper use of sarrum. The animosity and jealousy between Aldern and Cian grow as the older disciple becomes angry at their obvious superior talent.
After taking Otirus’s name, the two wards are dragged to a meditation room where Otirus attempts to pit them against each other. The two have a Duel of Souls. While Cian overcomes Aldern, he must overexert himself and ends up falling unconscious, an unclear victory.
Leerling Otirus sends the two on an errand, hoping Master Abrin will send them away or give them gray robes and take them off his hands. The two meet the relics master as he is entertaining a strange band of guests, the beginning of the Cadre (CB 49). Abrin sends them on what seems a mediocre test, a Veiling exercise on the eastern wall, near the dangerous Blood Lord Magi disciple houses.
The chore turns out to be something much more as the two lordlings discover a secret chamber wherein three gray-robed leerling are casting a ritual upon a Drahm relic, a iron-clad Urn. Discovered, Aldern and Cian must defend themselves with sword and sorcery. Aldern fatally wounds one of the Magi disciples while Cian holds off another’s spells. In the end, however, the encounter is ended with the appearance of Masters Abrin and Ulf, a Blood Lord Magus.
It becomes apparent to Aldern and Cian that Abrin knew exactly where their test would lead them, and that this was in fact his plan all along to call out Master Ulf and the Magi and their use of the Drahm relic. While there may be no punitive actions from either side, Aldern and Cian realize they have made clear enemies with the Magi. All they can do now is hope Abrin’s schemes are worth the trouble he may have just caused for them.
